Education and Training
2022 - Master of Science in Biology · Western Kentucky University · Bowling Green, Kentucky
Research Projects:
White-Nose Syndrome, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, and North American Bat Populations
Reviewed the biology, phylogeny, and pathogenicity of Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the fungal agent responsible for white-nose syndrome in North American bats. The project examined fungal taxonomy and reproductive biology, differences in disease tolerance between North American and Eurasian bat populations, environmental persistence and transmission, and the broader role of bats as reservoirs for emerging pathogens. Particular attention was given to the ecological and evolutionary factors influencing the contrasting outcomes of P. destructans infection among geographically separated bat populations.
The σ32 Heat-Shock Response: Evidence for an RNA Thermosensor in Escherichia coli
Examined the molecular regulation of the bacterial heat shock response through analysis of σ32 (rpoH) expression in Escherichia coli. The project focused on evidence that temperature dependent changes in mRNA secondary structure regulate ribosome access and translation, allowing the RNA itself to function as a thermosensor. The analysis incorporated mutational studies, RNA stability, protein expression data, and ribosome binding experiments.
